Moving to Florida: The 4 Life Lessons I Discovered

On May 15, 2021, I relocated to Orlando. I believed that moving to Florida alone was supposed to be my fresh start. I thought leaving everything behind would give me clarity, direction, and the kind of personal growth that only comes from stepping out of your comfort zone. Instead, I got hit with hard lessons that forced me to rethink everything I thought I knew about independence, plans, and survival.

If you’ve ever thought about moving somewhere new by yourself, let me be real with you—it’s not just a physical move. It’s a mental and emotional shift that will test you in ways you never expected. One experience that completely changed my perspective on living in Florida was Hurricane Ian in September 2022. It was terrifying, and my family was worried sick. The parking lots were flooded, and I had to move my car within my complex to keep it from being submerged. It was a harsh reminder that living here wasn’t just about sunshine and fresh starts—it came with unexpected challenges.

Moving to Florida: The Lessons I Discovered

1. You Can’t Do Everything Alone

I used to wear my independence like a badge of honor. I never liked asking for help. I thought handling everything on my own meant I was strong. But when you move somewhere with no real support system, that mentality gets put to the test fast.

At first, I isolated myself after moving to Florida, convinced I could figure it all out. I didn’t reach out, didn’t ask for advice—I just kept pushing forward. But over time, I realized that real strength isn’t about doing everything solo. It’s about knowing when to stand on your own and when to lean on the right people. The truth is, no one makes it alone. You need connections—whether it’s for guidance, opportunities, or just to keep your sanity intact.

2. Plans Will Fall Apart—Pivoting

Before moving to Florida, I had this perfect vision in my head. I had a job lined up, an apartment secured, and a whole plan for how everything would unfold. But once I got there, reality hit differently—things didn’t go as smoothly as I had imagined.

On my first day, I realized the job was nothing like what was promised. Without hesitation, I quit. That moment set the tone for my entire experience—nothing was going to go as planned. I ended up grinding through long hours as an Amazon driver, questioning if I had made the right move. But here’s the thing: life doesn’t care about your perfect blueprint. Plans will fall apart. The key isn’t avoiding failure—it’s learning how to pivot when things don’t go your way.

The people who get stuck are the ones who refuse to adapt. The ones who keep moving forward are the ones who embrace change, no matter how inconvenient it is.

3. Awareness is Everything—Staying Sharp

Moving to Florida alone taught me that survival isn’t just about money or opportunities—it’s about awareness. And I’m not just talking about watching your back in public. I’m talking about staying alert in every aspect of life.

One day, I stopped at a Wawa while working my route. Some random guy walked up to me, acting too friendly. Then he hit me with, “Hey man, let me borrow your phone.” I shut it down immediately. “No,” I told him. “They got a phone inside you can use.”

Maybe he was harmless. Maybe he wasn’t. But I wasn’t about to take that risk. That moment stuck with me because it reminded me of something real—people will test you. They’ll see what they can get away with. And if you’re not paying attention, you might find yourself in a situation you weren’t prepared for.

But it wasn’t just people I had to watch out for—it was nature, too. Florida has gators, and if you’re not careful, you can end up way too close to the wrong spot without even realizing it. People walk their dogs near lakes, clueless about what’s lurking just beneath the surface. It only takes a second for something to happen.

That’s why I developed habits to keep me sharp. One rule I set for myself: never wear both headphones when I’m outside. Whether I was walking, working, or stopping at a gas station, I always kept one ear open. Being aware isn’t about being paranoid—it’s about being prepared.

Florida Gator.

4. Gratitude—Appreciating What’s Right in Front of Me

One of the biggest takeaways from my time alone was learning to appreciate the small things. It’s easy to get caught up in chasing—more money, more opportunities, more success. But sometimes, you have to stop and recognize what you already have. No matter how tough things get, there’s always someone out there with a worse situation. That doesn’t mean I don’t strive for better, but it does mean I don’t take the present for granted. Even in the hardest moments, I found reasons to be grateful—whether it was for the lessons, the growth, or simply the fact that I had another chance to keep going.

If there’s one thing I know for sure after moving to Florida, it’s this—life will humble you, teach you, and test you in ways you never expected. But if you stay sharp, stay patient, and stay grateful, you’ll always find a way forward.

Final Thoughts

Moving to Florida wasn’t just about a change of scenery—it was a crash course in life. I thought I was stepping into a fresh start, but what I really walked into was a test of patience, resilience, and awareness. I had to learn that true independence isn’t about doing everything alone, but knowing when to seek the right support. I had to accept that no plan ever unfolds exactly as expected, but flexibility and persistence keep you in the game. And I had to sharpen my awareness, because whether it’s people, situations, or even nature, staying alert can make the difference between a close call and a costly mistake.

At the end of the day, moving to Florida and having that time alone to isolate, reflect, and learn was essential. Without it, I wouldn’t be writing this blog or have created TOP CTRL. No matter what, I’ll always appreciate and remember this experience.
