The Tribal Chief.

The Rise of Roman Reigns: A Redefined Legacy

Roman Reigns, born Leati Joseph Anoa’i, has undergone one of the most compelling transformations in WWE history. The Rise of Roman Reigns is a testament to resilience, adaptation, and an undeniable presence that sets him apart. From early struggles to becoming the face of the company, his journey hasn’t just been about winning titles—it’s been about proving, time and time again, that he is 'the guy' in professional wrestling.

The Rise of Roman Reigns: From Football to The Shield

Before stepping into the WWE ring, Reigns pursued a football career, playing at Georgia Tech before having brief stints in the NFL and CFL. When his football career didn’t pan out, he turned to wrestling—a decision that would ultimately define his legacy.

Debuting in WWE in 2012 as part of The Shield alongside Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose, Reigns immediately stood out. His sheer physical presence, spear, and unmatched intensity made him a force to be reckoned with. WWE saw him as the future, pushing him as the next top babyface after The Shield disbanded in 2014. However, the fans weren’t on board.

If you're a fan of The Shield from WWE like I am, check out my blog on Roman Reigns' fellow Shield member, Dean Ambrose, now known as Jon Moxley. Moxley wasn’t the chosen one in the group—often overlooked, he faced struggles both in professional wrestling and outside battles that led him to alcoholism. Read about how he recognized the need to get his life back on track in my blog, Breaking Free from Addiction: Jon Moxley's Story.

Facing Rejection and Battling Through

Despite WWE’s efforts to make him the new John Cena-like hero, the crowd rejected him. Whether it was the infamous 2015 Royal Rumble win or his main event losses to Brock Lesnar, Reigns couldn’t shake off the resistance. Fans saw him as forced, not organic. But what they didn’t see was the perseverance underneath the surface. Reigns never let the boos break him. Instead, he kept showing up, putting in the work, and slowly earning respect.

Then came his leukemia diagnosis in 2018. When he stepped away to battle the disease, the same crowd that once rejected him rallied behind him. It was a turning point—not just for his career but for how the audience viewed him. He wasn’t just a corporate pick anymore; he was a fighter, a man who overcame real adversity.

The Tribal Chief Era: A Legacy Cemented

The rise of Roman Reigns in 2020 marked the beginning of something special. Aligning with Paul Heyman and fully embracing his role as a dominant villain, Reigns transformed into The Tribal Chief. No longer seeking approval, he demanded acknowledgment. His unwavering confidence, commanding presence, and masterful storytelling—everything clicked.

His Universal Championship reign lasted an astonishing 1,316 days, one of the longest reigns in modern wrestling history. He defeated top stars like John Cena, Brock Lesnar, and stacked Edge and Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 37. Love him or hate him, you had no choice but to acknowledge him.

Witnessing the Aura: WrestleMania 40 Night 1

I had the privilege of attending WrestleMania 40 Night 1 in Philadelphia. Even though I wasn’t there for the Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns match on Night 2, you could feel Reigns’ presence throughout the stadium. Every time his name was mentioned, there was an energy shift. Whether it was cheers, boos, or anticipation—everyone had an opinion on Roman Reigns. He wasn’t just a champion; he was the champion.

Seeing him in that environment, you realize why WWE built everything around him. He carries himself differently. The moment his music hits, the entire arena stands still. Some wrestlers are great, but few have an aura—Roman Reigns does. Even without seeing his final showdown with Cody Rhodes, I knew he had already cemented his place as one of the greatest to ever do it.

The Future of The Tribal Chief

With Reigns reaching a turning point at WrestleMania 40, Cody Rhodes finally dethroned him, leaving the next chapter of his career uncertain. Will he take time off? Will he return even more dominant? One thing is certain—his story is far from over.

The Rise of Roman Reigns wasn’t just about evolution; it was a complete revolution of what it means to be the top guy in WWE. From rejection to redemption, from a forced babyface to an iconic heel, he has exemplified true perseverance. No matter what comes next, he will forever be the measuring stick in WWE.
